The Pristine Slopes of Agung

If you are looking for absolute peace and want to see how the local community farms without any tourist crowds, you must head east to Rendang. Located along the steep slopes leading up to Besakih Temple, these deep terraced valleys are extremely pristine. The view here is framed by Mount Agung, which looms spectacularly over the green terraces like a silent giant.

A few kilometers further east, near the famous Tirta Gangga Water Palace, you will find another gorgeous cluster of terraced paddies. The water flowing through these fields comes directly from the holy temple springs, which makes the crops incredibly lush and fertile. There are no selfie swings, zip lines, or tourist warungs here; just pure, agricultural life maintained by the local Subak cooperative.

Driving to Rendang takes about 1.5 hours from central Ubud. The roads are winding and steep, but bloody oath, the views along the way are amazing. Always carry a heap of small 10,000 and 20,000 IDR bills. The farmers maintain these paths out of their own pockets, and leaving a small donation of 25,000 IDR (~$1.50 USD) to explore their crop paths is a great way to support the local community directly.

Karangasem Weather & Rain Forecast

Because Rendang sits high on Mount Agung's southern ridges, its weather is very dynamic. The volcano can trap heavy tropical rain clouds in the afternoon, causing sudden mountain downpours. Checking our live local weather feed keeps you ahead of East Bali's daily tropical rhythms.
