Scales, Swings, and Selfie Sticks

Tegallalang, known locally to the Balinese as the Ceking Rice Terrace (or sometimes Cekingan Rice Terrace), is without doubt the most famous terrace system on the island, and once you look down into the steep river valley, you'll immediately see why. Unlike the wide, rolling slopes in Tabanan, the valley here is tight, narrow, and dramatic, creating steep green stairs that look almost vertical from the roadside cafes.

But let's keep it real: because of its close proximity to Ubud, it gets incredibly busy. If you arrive around ten in the morning, you'll be sharing the views with hundreds of tourists, all fighting for the perfect photo on the famous Bali swings or sky bikes. To escape the crowd, I tell my mates to get here just as the sun is creeping over the palms. Around 6:30 am, the air is cool, the valley is completely silent, and the golden sunbeams slicing through the morning mist are bloody beautiful.

Once you descend into the valley, the paths are mud-lined and steep. You will be crossing small bamboo bridges built across irrigation canals. Keep a heap of small 10,000 or 20,000 IDR bills in your pocket. The terraces are private farming land, and the local farmers maintain these bridges out of their own pockets. If a farmer asks for a small donation to cross their patch, smile, say Suksma (thanks in Balinese), and pay the small fee. It supports the community directly and keeps these beautiful paths open.

Swinging High Above the Palms

For those looking to add a bit of fun to their trek, Tegallalang has several famous adventure points. The giant swings are suspended between towering coconut trees, swinging you out over the deep valley floor. It is an amazing feeling, but definitely not for those who are scared of heights.

Costs for these swings and zip lines typically range from 150,000 to 450,000 IDR (~$9.00 - $28.00 USD), depending on which operator you go to. The staff are highly trained and use heavy-duty safety harnesses, which is reassuring. If you prefer to capture that perfect dress shot, many operators even rent out long, flowing dresses in vibrant colors that catch the wind beautifully as you swing.

If swings are not your style, you can try the sky bikes, where you cycle along a secure cable high above the green terraces. It is a fantastic thrill and gives you a completely unique view of the Subak irrigation channels below.

Ubud Climate

Ubud Microclimate Updates

Tegallalang's weather is very local. The valley traps heat and humidity, which makes a mid-morning climb quite heavy. It can rain suddenly in the afternoon, turning the muddy stairs into a slippery slide. Check our real-time weather widget before riding out.
