The Cool Mountain Ridge Farms

If you are looking to escape the sweating heat of the southern beaches, pack a jacket and head up the winding roads to Munduk. Located high in the Buleleng ridge, this mountain village is completely different from the coastal lowlands. The air is crisp, the valleys are constantly filled with swirling mountain fog, and the hillsides are planted with a mix of terraced rice, clove orchards, cocoa pods, and robusta coffee plants.

Because the terrain is so steep and high, the paddies here are smaller, stepping down narrow ridges bordered by deep forest gorges. What makes Munduk truly magical is the combination of terraces and giant waterfalls. You can set off on a three-hour hike that takes you through pristine green paddies and drops you straight at the base of the spectacular Melanting and Munduk Waterfalls.

Renting a scooter is great for exploring Munduk's winding lanes, but bloody oath, these roads are incredibly steep. If you are not a highly confident rider, hiring a private driver is by far the safest choice. The local farmers are very friendly and happy to let you explore their crop paths; just make sure to buy a fresh cup of organic Munduk coffee at a local warung along the way to support the community directly.

Mountain Climate

Munduk Rain & Fog Forecast

Because Munduk sits high on the Buleleng ridge, the temperature is significantly lower than South Bali. High rainfall and sudden heavy fog are very common in the afternoon, which can make steep mountain driving hazardous. Check our live weather forecaster before heading north.
