A lot of travelers think you have to hire a car and drive far north to see rice paddies, but that is not true. If you walk just five minutes from Ubud Palace, you can step onto a hidden stone trail that drops you straight into the middle of silent, organic fields. Known locally as the Kajeng Rice Fields Walk, this path winds through a ancient agricultural cooperative called **Subak Juwuk Manis**.
The trail begins as a concrete side street on Jalan Kajeng, where local artists have carved signatures and drawings into the paving stones. As you walk further, the houses fade away and are replaced by wide, open fields where local families plant rice, feed ducks, and maintain old family shrines. It is incredibly peaceful and feels a million miles away from the roaring scooter traffic on Ubud's main road.
Because the trail is flat, it makes a brilliant arvo stroll. You will pass a few organic warungs and juice bars built right on the edge of the fields. I highly recommend stopping for a fresh coconut or cold herbal tea to support the local families living along the trail. Always remember to stay on the paved path and avoid stepping into the wet fields, as these are working agricultural plots cared for by local farmers.
Because you are walking on flat, clay-lined stone paths, high rainfall can make the trail muddy and slippery in places. Checking the local weather feed before walking out from Jalan Kajeng helps you plan the perfect clear stroll.
The Kajeng walk is a working agricultural landscape, not a theme park. Please follow these guidelines to keep your walk sustainable:
